Wine At Tennesse Grocery Stores?
In Tennessee, the law prohibits the sale of wine in grocery stores. In Kentucky, such laws have recently been ruled unconstitutional. Lobbyists have been working hard to bring this about in our state for five years. Polls show Tennesseans overwhelmingly want the convenience of buying wine where they buy food. 35 out of 50 states allow wine sales in food stores, including five that border Tennessee. The major argument against wine in grocery stores is that it would hurt the "mom and pop" liquor stores. Gail Kerr breaks down the argument so well in the Tennessean.
Wilson County Fair Record Crowds
Lebanon Police are investigating a shooting that occurred at the Wilson County Fair Friday night. A dispatcher reports that the shooting happened just after 11 p.m. on Friday, the opening day of the Wilson County Fair in Lebanon. One person was shot but not seriously injured in the incident, she said. So far, no details on what led up to the shooting. Despite the news of the shooting the fair is bringing in record crowds, some 116,000 on Saturday. Tons of exhibits, cowboy church, a car show, as well as Joe Diffie and Daly & Vincent concerts are credited for bringing record crowds.
For those waiting - not so patiently for the new iphone - rumors have been flying. Stock prices are up at apple which might mean these particular rumors have substance. Look for a September 12th introduction, a September 21 launch date here in the US. Also in the apple rumor mill - a new smaller version of the ipad to compete with Kindle Fire - to which Amazon has a new model on the launch pad, too. Apple has an HDTV in the works too. Stay tuned because a new phone-pad-tv launch would rock the world if released simultaneously.
New App from Dunkin Donuts
Dunkin Donuts is the latest store to introduce a new app - to allow fast pay through your mobile phone (iphone or android) - the app doesn't accept coupons yet, but it's on the way. It's to save time through those pokey drive through lines. Starbucks has had a mobile app for sometime.

Food Prices Rise, Supplies Short
Drought is not just about the weather, it's about the grocery store and now even the farmer's market that reflect the effects of early summer. "We're having problems with things coming in," said a Nashville Farmers' Market vendor. The products that are available will likely make your grocery bill a little bit pricier. While the drought has affected everything from tomatoes to green beans and fruits, the main concern is corn. The drought across the U.S. has affected 88% of the country's corn crop.
MoneyTalksNews.com says here's how people are combatting the high food prices.
Use coupons, buy store brands and generics, buy less expensive canned items, shop discount grocers, buy in bulk and freeze large amounts of food. Find even more tips on saving on your food bill here.
Coffee MAY be good for you, but...
CNN reported this wknd that coffee MAY be good for you as in preventing type II diabetes, Parkinson's, and reasonably good for depression, as well as an 11% lower risk of heart failure. Coffee comes up in cancer research as a protection against basal cell carcinoma, endometriosis, and liver cancer. The greatest overall benefits appear to be in people who drink coffee at moderate levels: two to three cups a day. However coffee is not for everyone - fast heartbeat, don't drink it. And studies use black coffee - adding all those yummy frappe ingredients can zoom it to 500 calories, not good for anyone. Read the full article here.
