MORE STORM WATCHES FROM ISAAC
We're expecting some cooler weather and some rain, from Tropical Storm Isaac, but in the southeastern United States, they're under storm and flood warnings as it storms across the Gulf of Mexico. Forecasters say Isaac may make landfall this week in New Orleans as a hurricane, just in time for the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
RNC OPENING DAY DELAYED BY ISAAC
The Republican National Convention is being affected by Tropical Storm Isaac as well: today's opening day events are being rescheduled.
That means lots of politicians in town with time on their hands tonight. (Can you say, Karaoke?) Of course the highlight of the week will be the formal nomination of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney as the party's 2012 presidential nominee.
FIRST MAN ON THE MOON DIES
If you aren't old enough to remember 1969, you missed one of the few moments when most of America was UNITED. They were sitting in front of black and white TVs watching the first men walking on the moon. We didn't even know what the surface of the moon was like, until Neil Armstrong radioed back from the Apollo 11 spacecraft and told us, as he was stepping down onto the surface. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin both walked on the moon for about three hours, and we were enthralled. Armstrong has passed away from heart problems. He was 82. (In all, 12 Americans walked on the moon from 1969 to 1972)
An Ohio Congressman is launching a campaign for Neil Armstrong to be honored with a state funeral in the nation's capital. A state funeral in Washington DC is an honor usually reserved for former Presidents.
EXTRA WEIGHT INCREASES BREAST CANCER RECURRENCE
Extra weight absolutely, positively increases your chance of recurring breast cancer if you've had it before. Researchers say extra body fat causes hormonal changes and inflammation that could cause spreading and recurrence even with treatment. Doctors had already said being overweight increases your risk of getting it. (The study is available online in "Cancer," a peer-reviewed journal of the "American Cancer Society."
WOMAN'S STUCK GAS PEDAL, WILD RIDE, CAUGHT ON VIDEO
You can see the video HERE of a woman whose accelerator got stuck as she drove up Interstate Highway 35 in Missouri, making her car race at 110 miles an hour for 59 miles! She managed to switch lanes quickly, drive in the median and back up on the road to get around other drivers without hitting them, but couldn't even turn off the car, because it had a smart key, not an actual key in the ignition. 47 year-old Lauri Ulvestad managed to call 9-1-1 and a trooper gave her an escort for miles, until she managed to get the gas pedal unstuck. Cops say the situation wouldn't have been as dangerous as it was if cars in the left lane had PULLED OVER for the troopers’ flashing lights in their rear-view mirrors.
FAKE DOCTOR CARED FOR HUNDREDS OF PATIENTS BEFORE ARREST
Think about it, have you ever actually seen your doctor's diploma? A Georgia man treated as many as 500 elderly patients in South Carolina, and convincingly impersonated a doctor for months, even though officials don't think he ever had any medical training. He was apparently making it up as he went along, and was only caught when another doctor turned him in.
GAS PRICES UP
You may want to fill up today if you can: gas prices are still going up by about three cents a week the past couple of weeks. The national average is 3.75 a gallon...
