TEMPERATURES DROPPING AS ARCTIC AIR HITS
Dress warmly as you leave the house today The temperatures are dropping, as that arctic cold front hits Middle Tennessee. We started out in the 50s around midnight and we're in the 30s now. There's sleet in some areas, rain in others, still possible snow flurries here and there, and winds expected to really kick up and get gusty through the morning.
WRONG-WAY DRIVER ON I-40 KILLED IN HEAD-ON COLLISION
A wrong-way driver on I-40, a woman with Pennsylvania car tags, has been killed after she slammed, head-on this morning, into another car. The man she hit has been taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in extremely critical condition. 40 west was closed all morning between White Bridge Road and Charlotte, while everything was cleared up; and traffic eastbound (coming into town from the west), was affected because people were slowing down to look at the crash.
VANDERBILT CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OPENS NEW OFFICE
As the need for childrens' medical care increases, the Monroe Carrel Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt is expanding. Vandy just opened an after-hours children's clinic on New Shackle Island Road in Hendersonville to serve patients up to 18 years old. They already have one in Mt. Juliet and another one planned for Spring Hill.
NASHVILLE RESCUE MISSION NEEDS DONATED TURKEYS AND FOOD
The Nashville Rescue Mission is gearing up for its annual Thanksgiving meals for people experiencing homelessness in Nashville, and they say they still need hundreds more turkeys by Friday. If you can drop off a turkey, they'd love to have it, along with some of those giant-sized cans of veggies. PHILLIPINES TYPHOON FOLLOW
At least 17-hundred-74 deaths are being reported in the Philippines from super-Typhoon Haiyan, and officials expect the toll to go much higher. Thousands of people are missing and at least 24-hundred others have been injured.
Meanwhile, relief efforts for the Philippines are being accelerated, with the Defense Department sending Navy ships to the typhoon-devastated area.
GMA REPORTER DOING STORY FINDS OUT SHE HAS BREAST CANCER
As we encouraged you to get a mammogram in October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, Amy Robach, a reporter on Good Morning America, chose to get a mammogram, live on the show. Now, she's announced on GMA that her test results came back, POSITIVE. She DOES have breast cancer. The 40-year-old will have a double mastectomy later this week.
TURKEY MISTAKES EVERYONE MAKES
And speaking of the holidays, there's a pretty helpful article called "Turkey Mistakes Everyone Makes," They include waiting too late to buy the turkey, forgetting it takes four DAYS to thaw, and using the pop-up timer that comes with it. Many of those are set for too high a temperature, and when they pop up, the turkey is overdone. If you use a meat thermometer just once a year, this is the time.
METRO COUNCIL VOTES TONIGHT ON TEACHER BUYOUTS
Metro Council votes tonight on a new incentive program to buy out long-time Metro teachers. If it's approved, the program will be offered to employees with 30 years of experience or more, which include 269 teachers and staffers. The new incentive program would cost 4 million right off, but would save around $7 million a year later on.
DETAILS ON PROPOSED BALLPARK RELEASED
Mayor Karl Dean wants the city to chip in 65-million-dollars for a new minor league ballpark near downtown. On Monday, the Metro Sports Authority released details for the proposed stadium in the historic Sulphur Dell area. If approved, the Nashville Sounds will contribute 50-million-dollars and developers will contribute 37-million-dollars. The Metro Sports Authority would own the 85-hundred seat stadium.
UTAH DOCTOR INVENTS SMARTPHONE APP THAT DIAGNOSES ILLNESSES
A Utah physician is working on a smartphone app that can diagnose diseases, including HIV, diabetes and malaria. He says it'll save time and money, deliver results in minutes instead of the days or weeks it takes to get results back from labs.
DOWNTOWN ABBEY RENEWED FOR FIFTH SEASON
And in case you haven't already head through the DA Grapevine: Downton Abbey has been renewed for a fifth season, even though the fourth season doesn't start till January 5th on PBS. There's also a Downton Abbey Christmas special set for next month.
