FLU OUTBREAKS PROMPT MORE CONSCIENTIOUS HANDWASHING
Are you washing your hands more? More than HALF the people in a new survey say they're washing more. BUT..when they were asked what handwashing meant, very few of them said it meant washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Another new study finds it doesn't really matter if you wash with warm or cold water... just as long as you use soap, and wash for at least 20 seconds. That's still the most effective way to keep from getting sick. And when you're NOT where you can wash your hands... you may want to make a note to yourself.. don't touch your face.
STATE OF EMERGENCY (PROPANE SHORTAGE)
Some propane guys are having a slowdown right now... So many people, around the country, are using propane to keep warm, that there's a propane shortage. In fact, Governor Bill Haslam has declared a state of emergency here, which lifts restrictions on the transportation of propane in Tennessee. Normally, drivers transporting hazardous materials like propane are limited in the number of hours they are allowed to work at a stretch. The state of emergency will allow drivers to work longer hours in the hopes of ensuring propane delivery to homes and businesses during the cold spell.
COLD WEATHER, NATIONWIDE
With temperatures not expected to get above freezing again till late Saturday morining, hopefully you've remembered to leave the water dripping at the house and cabinet doors open, so the pipes can get a little warmth from the house. However, that means your heating bill will be higher. Some people are just now getting theirs, and one woman from Cheatham County says her electric bill from NES, doubled to more than 700 dollars for December.
NEED HELP PAYING HEATING BILLS
If you need help paying your bill, NES says talk to them, they'll try to work out something with you. And remember the phone number 2-1-1.. That's the information number to find out what help is available here in the state.
OTHER PARTS OF COUNTRY HIT EVEN HARDER
They're getting hit even harder in other parts of the country, Parts of the eastern half of the U.S. are getting a LOT of snow and temperatures and windchills well below zero. More than three-thousand flights already have been cancelled and more expected to be today.
METRO SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS TOLD 'GET THERE EARLY'
Most schools are open today, except for Robertson and Sumner County schools here in the Mix listening area. And since we had so many problems last cold spell with schoolbuses not starting, bus drivers were told to get to work early. They had to show up at 4:30 and get the buses started and warmed up. That way if some didn't start there'd be enough time for service trucks to get there, and no missed routes ... or missed school days... from Metro just not being prepared.
TIME TO PAY TAXES
It's time to file your income taxes. Now, since most people file online, the Internal Revenue Service has teamed up with a group of tax software companies and is offering again what's called "Free File." If your income was below 58 thousand last year, you can file online for free.
Just go to www.irs.gov/freefile to find out more.
NASHVILLE MAN CALLS AHEAD AND PUTS ITEMS ON HOLD AT GAMESTOP, THEN STEALS THEM
Nashville is in the national news again... because not only are our crooks 'crooks,' but some are also EXCEEDINGLY LAZY.
A guy who was planning to rob the GameStop in Madison... called AHEAD and had the employees put an Xbox and some games on HOLD... so he could just run in, pull a handgun on the poor clerk, get the stuff, and the cash from the drawer, and leave. Police have a surveillance photo of him, and they do know what car he was driving, so they're looking for the guy.
WORST. POLICE SKETCH. EVER
Two women in Texas were robbed at knifepoint in broad daylight Thursday by ... a guy either from the Charlie Brown cartoons, or... who looks like that bad Jesus painting restoration from awhile back. The police sketch of the victim has gone viral for being called the worst. police sketch. ever. The Sheriff's Department issued a statement reminding the public that, "the sketch is not a true depiction of the suspect, only a likeness." Someone posted below the story, "Wow, good thing they cleared that up." You can at least tell he has hair, two eyes, a kind of nose, and ears. You can see it on the link, above.
STUDY; SMALLEST CARS CARRY BIGGEST INJURY RISK
This is one of those, 'Well, Duh!' kind of studies. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says the smallest cars on the road - which are the most fuel efficient - also carry the biggest risk of injury. The Chevrolet Spark is the only car that got an "acceptable" rating in Wednesday's Insurance Industry report.

Johnson also gave his MOM a car for Christmas, saying he remembered seeing her crying when he was 14, because their only car had been repossessed.
Former American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson gave her assistant a HOUSE! (Walter Williams reacted with screams and smiles)
